The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day

Updated: Apr 22

Ever since we began our journey with Rhoda, it seems like every day has been wonderful. That all changed today. It was a devastating day.

We woke up excited to spend the day at Bryce National Park. It has been on our bucket list for ages. We studied maps; researched where to go and what to see. Yesterday we got to rim of Bruce Canyon on our "muleback" ride. It just whetted our appetite for today's visit. It was not to be.

We left Rhoda at the campsite. Jamie was at the wheel as we were driving to Bryce on narrow and curvy Route 89. Without any warning, a deer jumped in front of our truck. Jamie didn't have a chance to slow, stop or even swerve to avoid her. We hit her at 60mph, 5mph under the posted speed limit. I saw her fly through the air along with parts of our grille. She disappeared, probably to die. I don't think I'll ever forget the moment of impact or get over the fact that we killed an innocent animal. I'm so distraught, I can't even cry. Hopefully writing about it will help. I can't stop shaking and thinking of that deer.

In practical terms, we're screwed. Sierra, our truck that pulls Rhoda sustained significant damage. Her grille is gone. Her radiator is totally exposed and the right front corner and headlight on the passenger side caved in. The seatbelts don't work, the check engine light is on and the airbag deployment indicator is on. Jamie, Enzo, Gizmo and I were unhurt.

Before

We were able to drive about 10 minutes back to the campground. Can we drive Sierra home? Can we tow Rhoda safely to Colorado on the steep Rocky Mountain roads? If not, will we be stuck in Utah for days, weeks or months? Might we have to leave Sierra and Rhoda here and rent a car to get home and then come back? We just don't know. All I can think of is that poor deer.

Since it is Sunday in Utah, we're in limbo until tomorrow. I'll post again when we have information and a plan.
