Lots of Shaking During Our Shakedown Cruise

Updated: Apr 17

April 5-7

We were so excited about new Rhoda, we just couldn't wait to get her out and camp with her. But weather during April in Colorado is unreliable. So far this month, we've had a 3.5 foot snowstorm as well as temperatures in the 70s. Around here you keep snow tires on your car and don't plant gardens until after Mother's Day. So if we were going to take Rhoda out in April, we weren't going far. So we booked into the small Clear Creek RV Park in nearby Golden. It's a nice place that backs right up onto the Clear Creek. The manager, Jason, is the best campsite manager we've ever met. Spending a couple of nights there would give us the opportunity to set Rhoda up and familiarize ourselves with our new camper while making sure everything worked.

We didn't realize the campground was under construction so there were only a few sites available. Fortunately we reserved 2 weekend days so construction was ending as we checked in on Friday afternoon.

Jamie backed Rhoda into our site like a champion. Even though she was 4 feet larger than our old camper, it didn't seem to make any difference to Jamie, whose middle name is actually Driver! We set up Rhoda quickly and easily and began the process of figuring where things belonged. We were blown away by the amount of storage in our new camper. There were tons of cabinets, drawers, a pantry and linen closet.

Our friends Donna & Gregg, Rhoda's first visitors, came for dinner. Jamie used the griddle that came with the camper to cook an amazing meal! As we settled in for the night. my phone buzzed with a weather alert for gale force winds starting the next day.

We woke up refreshed from a great night's sleep. Before long, the wind started to whip up as we left the campground to do some errands. By the time we returned, there were significant gusts exceeding 60mph. Rhoda was warm, cozy and felt very safe. By sunset, the winds were crazy. During the night we had gusts in excess of 80mph. Most of our home town lost power but the campground's electricity stayed on. So we decided to spend an extra night in Golden with Rhoda to enjoy all of her conveniences. The next morning, we packed up and brought Rhoda back to her home at a storage facility. We were thrilled with 0ur shakedown cruise, even though it was shakier than we expected.

Our next trip is scheduled for April 18-24 to Bryce and Zion National Parks
