Friday August 30th
We woke up early in Ely, NV because we had a 6 hour drive to Lake Tahoe where we would meet up with daughter Lindsey, son in law Jon and Granddog Porter. We left at 7:30am and navigated our way back onto America’s loneliest highway, Route 50.
It is really astonishing. We drove for hours without seeing anything…no houses, buildings or people. We only saw a handful of cars, a few cattle; countless acres of scrub land and distant mountains.
An audio book about Lewis & Clarke, written and narrated by Ken Burns entertained us. It also whetted our appetites for the upcoming section of our trip when we will travel in the footsteps of the explorers and visit places integral to their journey.
A few hours after leaving Ely, we pulled into Eureka, NV. It was an oasis in a seemingly endless sea of scrub brush. We were happy to find a gas station where filled our tank and emptied our bladders.
We eventually reached the freeway that took us to Reno. After so many hours of seeing absolutely nothing, we went into sensory overload from the dense traffic; the endless stream of electronic billboards and enormous casinos lining both sides of the 8 lane superhighway. We were relieved to turn onto the road that would take us to Lake Tahoe and our kids.
After entering California We arrived at our home for the next three days. The William Kent Campground, on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, is owned by the National Forest Service. We have adjoining campsites, one for us and one for Lindsey & Jon. They showed up shortly after we set up Rhoda. We had a grand reunion complete with margaritas, homemade lasagna, sweet corn and peaches from Colorado. We were too excited to take photos. I promise to make up for that tomorrow.
They pitched their tent and we all settled in for the night. Sweet dreams from Lake Tahoe, CA
Loving that you’re with your beloveds!! This makes my heart so happy ♥️💕♥️ Have a great day and keep the blog coming
That desolate landscape makes me thirsty.
